Are you allowed to enter a shop and ask if they have any positions?

My sister has recently told my mum that you are no longer allowed to enter a shop and ask if there are any positions.

I cant find any information on this online and wondered if anyone knew the answer.

  • No longer allowed? Says who? What stopping anyone asking if their have positions vacant?
  • I'd be interested to hear where your sister found this information? She's not being encouraged by your mum to get a shop job and trying to get out of it, is she?

The worst that can happen is the shop can say they're not interested, not looking for staff or don't take speculative applications, but there's nothing to stop an individual asking the question.

It's easier to send your CV to a large amount of companies via post. Do this near Christmas, send out 60 speculative letters and I guarantee at least one will offer you an interview. Don't bother emailing. It'll probably not get read if employer receives a lot of emails. And don't hand in your CV in person unless you know when employer is not so busy.
  • What a strange idea! I saw someone ask about vacancies only last week, and they were told to take their CV to a certain counter.

  • My sister and her partner arent working and theyve just got a house in a new area, my mum was telling her that they should get themselves in every shop in the area to see if there are any jobs going and leave the cv their for any future positions. My sister said that you are no longer allowed to as it is classed as pestering. She told my mum that she was told this when she has attended the job center.

    Oh bless.

This sounds exactly the type of thing I would have told my Mum at one time too. :rotfl:

How did she say this came about OP? Did she say where she'd heard this?:D

Edit: Just read your previous post, and question was answered. Also see that she's an adult with a partner and a house so I take back my assumption that she was a young teenager. Apologies.

The shops I asked when I was looking for work they said to bring in a CV and they would get back to me.

You can definitely ask but whether you get told No, not recruiting or bring in a cv is up to the person you ask in the shop.

Edit Just seen your otyher post, well the JC didnt have a problem with it last year but things could have changed since then, as long as it done politely I cant see that its pestering in fact if the outcome is an interview then its a good thing.

That is exactly what I thought, she just got her own place and I think her and her partner are getting a little too cosy in their own little place thats pretty much paid for, dont get me wrong im not bitter but I think at 19 and 20 they have no excuse.

How much is a 2nd class stamp now, about 50p ?
For someone to spend £30 on speculative letters may not be possible if you're struggling on benefits.

AFAIK, it's not a criminal offence to walk into a shop and ask if they are recruiting.
