Plasma or LCD?

I know I'm posting in the wrong forum and the wrong website, but I'm asking here because I've always got great advice from anyone who's been good enough to reply and I feel more comfortable here, knowing the advice is from someone nearby with experience.
My ex-OH (my baby's mum)'s TV is on it's last legs. More often than not it'll display a ring of colours starting with a bullseye and moving out, a bit like an archery board where any object in that ring will be green, blue or purple, depending on the ring they occupy at that moment. The outer edges, the 5% of screen in each of the four corners are grand, but the rest of the screen is like watching Avatar.
So I was going to buy her a new TV. Then I got bogged down in the specs and now, with more information than I know what to do with, I don't know what to get her.
I wanted to get something 40"-42" to stick on her living room wall, but there are so many options. Full HD (1080) seems to be the way to go, but plasma is meant to look better and not suffer from motion blur, and the 720 vs 1080 isn't meant to be much of a difference from a few feet away. She'll be watching it from about two metres away at least.
Is plasma a better option? I hear it's better but honestly I've no idea. Is low res plasma better than high res LCD? I doubt she'll be annoyed at not seeing the dust fly off the drills during 60 Minute Makeover, but I don't want to get her something that has some inherent flaw like motion blur that makes her wish she'd just taken my TV instead. LCD is meant to be bad for that.
Any ideas?
I was looking on Tesco and Amazon, can get a decent TV for under £400, but who knows what to go for. I was hoping to get someone to install it on the wall as well, but again, not sure what to go for.
I'd be grateful for any advice. Thanks!
Nathan

What type of TV are you replacing? I don't like attaching TVs to walls as I don't like the idea of them falling off, it's harder to plug stuff in (and hide the wires) and I need a table anyway for the boxes that connect to it.
Anyway, I never find Tesco very competitive for this stuff.
I'd take a plasma any day, colours, blacks, viewing angles are generally better, and resolution doesn't count for much on a cheapo LCD (even with LED!) if the picture is cloudy and the blacks are grey!
How about this:

or one of these 2. They're both the same model number so just get whatever one's available. Panasonic make great plasmas.

Neither LCD or Plasma if I had the choice
LED is the future and cheaper to run as well, this puppy below is the dogs danglies for under £390, full HD with freeview HD inbuilt and it even has USB ConnectShare Movie too. I have the 32" version just put in my kitchen to replace an old 14" portable due to analogue demise and it is brilliant :T

Did you ever put that question to a woman ?
Every day and I always know what I want.
You touch though I think on the point that I am getting at in that fancy TVs are often more a "man" thing. I and most women I know are content with one that merely works. When I was a single parent with small kids I think I'd have cried if my ex had produced an expensive, all singing, all dancing TV set when I often struggled to pay for more basic priorities.
That may not be the case here but I just think it's worth him checking if he hasn't already done so.

You do realise that an "LED TV" is actually still an LCD TV, just with LEDs to provide the illumination for the LCD panel?
Yep, I am, but the LED's are much thinner than original LCD's and also use a lot less power, I have a 'A' rated Samsung telly now which uses similar power to an energy saving light bulb:T
The whole panel itself weighs next to nothing so it is ideal for wall mounting too which is what the OP also wanted. I have helped a friend in the past wall mount a 40" Plasma, it took 3 of us :eek:I am trying, honest;) very trying according to my dear OH:rotfl:0 -
The plasma, especially Panasonic, will knock spots off anything else for picture quality, but LED has weight and running cost benefits. Depends on your priorities.0

I have this one & cannot fault it,I can play my music & stuff stored on my laptops external hard drive,it's easy to use & the picture is awesome!
I even have my old PC desktop tower connected & can use the TV as a monitor to surf the web & watch streaming movies as well.
