Thanks guys, at least it's clearer now. I don't drive at all and this is giving me a massive headache.

Aww feel for you, its a nightmare when they start to drive and a constant worry, glad its clearer now and you have had your mind put at rest regarding points on licence etc, regards meg

    Thanks....really appreciate all your advise....
  • Start getting used to it - he's likely to have several minor bangs over the next year or so.

If you inform his insurer he'll have to pay extra £££ for the next 5 years.
    That's a last resort really.

If it's just his car damaged then get it repaired privately.

Oh and take his version of events with a pinch of salt... given the age and inexperience it's most likely he took a bend too fast or misjudged a situation; I doubt any other car was involved, nevermind another car being at fault. They feel they have to lie otherwise their parents will kill them!

In this instance, lets assume the damage is worth £500....
You can either pay that now OR go through insurance and pay 3x that in increased premiums over the next 5 years.

Yes, it makes you wonder why we have insurance......

    Take your pick.

I agree with all suggesting not involving the insurance company. They are just itching to find any excuse to put up premiums which will amount to several thousands over the next few years even if your son was not at fault.
