Marketing Course? - CIM Chartered Institute of Marketing

Does anyone have any experience of the online learning courses in Marketing?
I've been trying to find a graphic design position with the local design companies for the last few months.
Not surprisingly, jobs are pretty scarce and most companies want someone with previous experience.
I figure I should keep learning while looking and think an entry level marketing / advertising qualification might benefit me.
Any recommendations?

Do you have any qualifications or experience at all in these areas?0

No real experience. I have a Foundation Degree in Media (graphic) Design.
I'd like to add to my portfolio of skills to help me secure a job in the graphic design sector.

If you have a degree already, you will struggle to find funding for other courses. Try contact Next Step (best to google for local number) who offer free, independant advice on careers & training. Or your local FE College that offers media & related courses.0

I'm a Marketeer and work with designers regularly.
I don't think a marketing qual is essential for a designer. I'd be more Interested in seeing a varied portfolio of stuff you've already done for different types of business.
Could you volunteer to do some work for local charities? Get them to send you some multi media briefs?
You've probably got a decent portfolio already, but it'd be good to keep your hand in and get more experience of working to briefs. It'll also demonstrate how pro-active and committed you are which always goes down well on CVs! Plus it won't cost you anything but your time.
Good luck!2009: £328

I am in a similar situation as you are, also want a career in online marketing,
I found some useful information on this page

CIM is a decent qualification but
1) It wont help you get a job as a designer - just a mktg exec
2) Experience and portfolio outweigh qualifications.
Therefore I suggest do design work fro freiends family & local business even for free and build up an awesome portfolio which will help your CV ten fold.
3 years and alot of money on a CIM will just slow this down.0 -
Thanks for all the helpful comments guys.
I have a fairly decent portfolio from the design side but without real world experience it's proving very hard to find a studio who'll take me on.
I agree training in another area would slow things down and I could really do with some extra income right now.
I think I'll have to try and grab any part-time job and work on building my own clients for now, until the time I can secure a place in a design studio.
