PC starting to 'go weird' - what can i do?

My five year old Dell desktop PC has recently started to go weird, in that way that computers do once they reach the 'beginning of the end'....slowness on boot-up, programs keep hanging/crashing, big white blocks on screen when I close down a window, noisier than usual hard drive (like it's working harder than usual).

However, I feel there is still plenty of life left in it, so I want to know what I can do to save it before it goes totally off the rails....I'm loathed to have to buy yet another new PC...

I'm currently running some anti-viruses such as Spybot Search & Destroy, Avast, Malawarebytes etc

Is there is anything else I can do to help matters? Ideally I want to avoid messing with the registry fixer programs, re-formatting the PC etc as in my experience with past PC's, it just makes matters worse.

Thanks

Download DDS from the link below and save it to your desktop:

    Link

After you've downloaded it and saved it to your desktop:
    • Double click DDS to run it.
    • When it's finished, DDS will open two logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop.

Copy & paste the contents of just DDS.txt for now and post it here (you may need to split the log over separate posts)

Two AV's running - always a no no - Did you install Avast in compatible mode? Other crapware installed. No SP3? Running multiple scans together isn't going to help

Uninstall AVG through add/remove programs and run the avg remover.

    AVG Free 8.5

    http://forums.avg.com/gb-en/avg-forums?sec=thread&act=show&id=791

    Go into spybot s&d > mode > advanced > tools > resident > uncheck teatimer > reboot

    Uninstall these:

    Ask Toolbar
    Java Auto Updater
Java SE Development Kit 7 Update 7
    Java(TM) 6 Update 31
    McAfee Security Scan Plus

Post back when you've done that.

Done all of the above, with exception of running the AVG Remover, because for some reason as of today, internet pages are either not loading or are taking a very very long time to load despite network showing 'Speed: 36 Mbps, Signal Strength: Excellent'. Not sure if that's a PC problem or Wi-Fi issue.

Other patterns of weirdness noticed today: Long time to switch between windows, windows staying open even when minimised, clicking on buttons yet no response.

    Has my PC had it?!

The PC's a mess - it might just need a little TLC or it might be something else. One step at a time unless you want to restore/reinstall - there's no quick fix to get it secure and working.

If your hard drive is making noises, then it could be a sign of imminent drive failure, so the very first thing that you should be doing is a data backup, if you're not already doing so.
Not backing up is always risky, on a 5 year old drive it's suicidal. Do it first and then sort out the infections or reinstall.
(If you have already backed up, others may benefit from the same advice).

What's you physical ram total, and commit charge and peak commit from task manager, performance? https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2436849

reformatting the pc should make things better, not worse. A dell factory restore should only take 10 minutes, but backup any data first.

have you modified your hosts file?
