ive just done my mileage expenses

    good for you
now why do you think your circumstances have anything to do with the OP's situation?
Agreed it appears the OP may be involved in care work, but that has not been confirmed in detail and until that is done it is equally possible that the OP is doing nothing more than taxable commuting to temporary places of employment for which they are err... taxable and need business cover
  • Firstly, thanks for the answers. Although my original question would appear to be in dispute amongst some of you, there are things that have been pointed out that make things quite clear. Car insurance for instance. Never gave it a second thought that I'd need business class insurance and it turns out I do! Thanks to Withabix and 00ec25 for pointing that out.

Have now spoken to the agency and the tax office. The agency say that I pay tax on mileage because the money I get paid for mileage is classed as a benefit and not business miles. If I were to be moving around within my job it would be classed as business miles and therefore not taxed but because I only travel from home to work and back it doesn't count.

However, the tax office are a little unsure whether I can claim it back because I'm not travelling to the same place of employment each time like I do in my permanent job. Because the agency can send me anywhere in the country to work it's possible I could claim the tax back. I have to send them a letter explaining my full circumstances to them and see what they say.
