Work overpaid me.

My previous work overpaid me and I have made several attempts to contact them and say I have been overpaid. They seem to have no idea about it.
I was just wondering if there was a particular time period where this money actually becomes mine if they don't respond.
Many Thanks Ashley

I don't think it ever becomes yours, so I would put it somewhere you won't use it & continue to contact them to raise the issue & repay them otherwise several years down the track they may try to reclaim it.

However are you sure you have been overpaid? Could it be they have paid you say time & a half for some overtime or if it was your final pay paid you for holidays you had earned but hadn't taken?

  • Well its a long story, but my previous job initially got the date I handed my resignation letter in as my leaving day and then demanded I paid a £1000 which was incorrect. This was resolved then I got 600 pound last pay day from them. I rang them up to confirm this money was mine and some how on record they had me paying them a cheque for a £1000 pound which never occured.
I think I am owed a weeks pay which is about 200 of that.
    Its all so confusing :S.
    Thanks for the advice bluenoseam.
  • I would say 6 years as after that it becomes statute barred. (5 in Scotland)

Put it in its own high interest account, if they ever ask for it back they have to give you time and warning so you would be able to apply to take it out of those savings. If they take a few years you can make money off it.
The money is never yours, but if the company dissolves or something you can probably safely keep it.
Beware that if the company is bought out in the future or changes owners they may go through old books and figure it out at any time. Send them an email so you have a record of it then it is up to them to contact you now as you can prove you tried to tell them.

I need around £10,000. Help me get there!
