sorry i know this is the wrong place for this, but is anyone else having real problems with this site recently - typically very slow and often not available at all ?

Wrong sub-forum, aye, but yes I also get intermitten very slow performance on MSE. Currently using a gigabit fibre backbone connection to SuperJAnet so it should be more than acceptable...

I'm finding it fairly slow during the day. It'll be normal for it to be alternating fast and slow month by month as the site grows and adjustments are made to improve it each time. It's tough for the MSE team to keep ahead of growth, as it is for most sites as they grow from a small player architecture to highly scalable architecture. Takes a lot of work, with very limited time available. This only ends when either the site gets a fully scalable architecture in place or when the growth slows to "only" 10% or so a month, which looks likely to be some years away for MSE.

I've been there and done this in a place doubling roughly every quarter for years starting with a single computer and growing to hundreds. Even running hard it was just barely possible to keep up and even then there were slow periods.

The best thing you can do is report exactly what is slow, at what time of day and then be as patient as possible while the MSE team races to try to keep up.
