Childrens glasses/lens dilema

Hi
Does anyone know if the optical prescription will cover the cost of contact lenses? At my sons last check up I was asked to sign the form and I noticed that it mentioned lenses, but I didn't get a chance to look at it properly because it was whisked away and put on file in case they need it for replacement glasses during the year. I had a look on the nhs prescription webpages and it doesn't say anything about contact lenses.
At the moment he wears daily lenses on the days he has football - as he can't wear his glasses - but he'd like to go over to monthly lenses so he can wear them more often. Not sure of the costs involved though.

The voucher given can cover contact lenses but you wont get many! I would ask at your optician the details. Obviously it depends on what the prescription is to the voucher value but a voucher A is £37.10 so I would guess at a maximum with one voucher you could get a 3 months supply of monthlies, probably less.
Your son will also need to trial the monthlies to see if he gets on with them. Some opticians charge for this too
Hope that helps, but i would ask instore.0 -
My daughter although just about to turn 18 has been told by both Vision Express and Boots opticians they do not honour the optical voucher towards lenses as they are seen as cosmetic rather than necessity. She has just signed herself into a monthly programme with boots and the lenses are priced at £19 a month plus £4 for the solution. What she wasn't told until she had signed up is that the lenses are delivered every 3 months so she wouldn't receive any till January now but payments to be taken monthly. However, the optician is sorting her out a 'free' set to tide her over with ontop of the trial ones she was given to see if she can adapt to using them.:j Was married 2nd october 2009 to the most wonderful man possible:j

I wouldn't ever recommend monthlies - they can't be cleaned properly and the risk of infection is high
I managed two years then I got an ulcer - pure agony- and can no longer wear contacts. Keep him in dailies, much safer0 -

Agreed suki . I'm an the same position after an infection in July , as you say agonising pain , possible sight loss , and at the worst eye removal .
Sammyw . Please read this thread before you consider lenses for your son .
