It's going to depend on how many trips you expect to do each day.

If it's just a couple of singles then a travelcard won't make much difference, like when I went from Waterloo to Kings Cross and back the travelcard added slightly more than the return to Kings Cross from here

If you go for Oyster then singles are cheaper, and it has a maximum daily charge which is the same as having a travelcard.

    Compare all the rates at
    http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/14416.aspx

And the map of the zones may help

Thank you for the information and links.

The schedule (so far) has us going from Liverpool Street to Golders Green and staying there overnight. The next day; we go to Earls Court. Afterwards we may go elsewhere and then to Liverpool Street or (depending on how tired we are) straight from Earls Court to Liverpool Street.

I'll look at the links and try to work things out.

    Thanks again

You can buy a tube travel card 24 hrs before departure at Colchester Train Station. You will both need passport photos. I travel up from Clacton and always buy my card the day before.

    Thanks.

Would the tube travel card only be valid for that day?

In otherwords would I have to buy one for the Saturday (Liverpool St to Golders Green) and another for Sunday? If so; maybe it's not worth buying one for Saturday and I'd be better off paying the standard fare for the single tube journey we make on the Saturday?

I appreciate your comments - thanks.

No, I get weekly tickets. You can get them for the length you need.

Not all the staff at the stations know they can issue them. If they say they can't do it , tell them to check as they can.

    That's very useful to know.

    Thanks again.

    Thanks

The start station is Colchester in Essex, so yes, we arrive at Liverpool Street.

When you say buy 'Just buy day travelcards, one for each day' you mean there are travel cards for the Underground? In other words; buy my train tickets in advance and Underground travel cards for the Underground whilst we are in London?

That's what I meant, yes. You will need one for each day - if you are only making one journey then it won't be worth while for that day. They are also valid on buses and some trains - not just the tube.

You will not need a photo for a one day travelcard - only for weekly and longer

If you can be bothered with the deposit lark then Oyster might suit you better. Again, you can buy at Liverpool Street on arrival

If you're just making one journey on the the Saturday you won't want either a Colchester - London travelcard, or a Colchester - London single plus Travelcard. Oyster will be better.

As for the tickets, either book in advance or consider a Colchester - London off-peak return. It's valid to go out Saturday and return Sunday. Price is £31.50. You can save £10.70 off that price, each, by buying a Network Railcard (one between two people is fine) for £28, valid for a year. If you're planning to do a lot of travel on Sunday, it can also be used to buy a travelcard for the reduced price of £5.60 (instead of £8.50)

For reference a single from Liverpool Street to Golders Green is £4:30 cash or £2:60 with an oyster card. GG-EC is the same price and EC-Liv ST is £4:30 cash or £2 with the oyster card
