We buy horse carrots etc to bulk out their, our first one is going on a non-returnable holiday;) on the 30th of this month, and we workd it out we have to charge £4.50 per kg when we sell half a pig....
I am looking for someone local where I can buy half a lamb..
If I am going to pay higher prices, I would rather it be spent direct with the breeder/rearer or local butcher rather than the supermarkets...
I totally agree I would rather pay higher prices at the good farm shop/local butcher/direct producer... But laws regarding feeding of kitchen waste have been in for a while. the 2001 f&m outbreak was attributed to infected pig swill (While I understand small farmers are unlikely to be a source, any unsuspecting person feeding unknown waste could be a source) I saw the news reports of F&M in 2001 in the window of a tv shop, and stood, unbelieving in the street for 15 minutes staring at the screen. We were taught in vet school (where I still was) it was a dead disease, so to see an outbreak made us question whether there would be a future in farming at all)Sorry, I may have ranted there, but just want to say there is a reason behind most animal health rules (and yes, common sense, you would think would prevail, but pig swill was commonly omnivorous, so therefore a risk)
