We did check that he did own it, it's gone through our solicitor and through the land registry (and he only sold it to us for £1) so I think it's unlikely it's a scam.

Seems like he wanted rid of it, so it was either costing him in time and/or money, or he cannot find a use for it.

In the unlikely event that it gave sole access to potential development land, you could be looking at a profit of thousands.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

If it is only a verge width then although the vendor may own it, it may still be classed as part of the public highway hence the street furniture

  • I'd be worried about the council saying 'fine, we'll remove the bin then' instead and ending up with land covered in dog poo :-(

I know BT pay a small amount for poles on private land (so long as they don't just serve the house who's land they are on), but it is only a few pounds and hardly worth claiming. I suspect the council will only pay a few pounds as well.
  • This sounds like a bit of land, that is no good for anything UNTIL...

there is some sort of re-development, or new access roads etc, THEN it is called a ransom strip;)

Call me sinical, but why would the seller throw in this strip of land for a £1???????

and why have they ended up only owning a small strip of land?
