My job is making me ill

Hi all,

Please bear with me as I'm new to this, and this is my first post :)

Basically, I have started taking antidepressants again after being told by my doctor I have relapsed. My problem tho, is work. I work in a privately owned hotel where there is no such thing as an HR dept, or even confidentiality where we can settle any grievances.
It is for this reason that I chose not to be signed off work, as everyone would know my very private business within minutes of giving my sick note.

The main problem in this workplace, is the boss. She is a bully, and never misses an opportunity to put someone down. Given my current mental condition, I hope you can understand why this is a major problem.

There has recently been a police investigation in this place, which caused everyone a great deal or stress and mainly the boss, took her stress out on everyone else. Although this is now over, the stress of the bosses everyday mood continues to get us down.

In these circumstances, my question is simply- am I within my rights to quit my job, and would I be eligible for a JSA claim if I did?

*Can I also add, that this company has a very bad reputation at my local job centre for her treatment of her staff.*

Thank you in advance for your help/advice

I would speak to an adviser at the job centre, as they should be able to advise. As said already, your continued health is the main priority.

It would be worth looking for opportunities to do some charity work whilst you're seeking a new job, as this should help keep your self-esteem and confidence up.

    Good luck

whats your job? surely you could get another at another hotel? experience is like gold bars.
  • Thanks for the replies,

I work as a hotel receptionist. Working odd hours on a rota basis. I've had time off due to illness before- that was only one day when I had flu and I had to give up a day off the following week to make up for it.

I am looking for new jobs, but all that seem to be availabel arre ones I am not qualified for.

You can be sanctioned by JSA for leaving a job without good reason. My advice is to find a new job ASAP and to leave on good terms.

Don't let the boss get to you, you are not "lower" than her as a person and anyone who feels the need to bully are those who are normally very insecure. In short your life is better than theirs.

It's not worth letting them get to you

If your doctor will support what you have said it is unlikely you will be sanctioned if you left and claimed JSA. However, it is far more difficult to get work when you are out of work, and being unemployed in the current climate is depressing in itself - can you not manage to stay whilst you find something else?

I think that is the biggest problem here. My boss seems to think because she has money, it somehow justifies her treating me and others like dirt. She uses anything she can to indimidate people, and treat us (even tell us sometimes) that she is so much better than us.
I'd had a really hard time before I started this job, and my boss has used that against me before- she became a friend, then said I only spoke to her about myself (when she asked) to gain sympathy and attention!

Don't let the bully win! When you see her walking around the hotel, imagine her dressed as a bunny girl or Minnie Mouse or whatever makes you smile.

Keep your spirits up and get yourself a new job as soon as possible.
