Help! Mushy mackerel!

I bought a vac pack of 3 smoked mackerel at Tesc* earlier and just unpacked it, but when I tried to flake it it is all mushy like a paste! I was going to use it for fishcakes so the texture isn't the end of the world, but is it safe to eat? It says on the back that it may have been previously frozen so i'm guessing that might have something to do with it? Please answer asap as I need to get dinner on!

Possibly too late now but I wouldn't eat it if it were me. When I was younger I was a bit of a fussier eater. One evening I was given a piece of mackeral which was mushy. My parents thought I was just being fussy and made me keep eating it until eventually my dad tried some and realised it wasn't right. I don't recall being ill from it but I know that I couldn't bring myself to eat mackeral for years after that - it was so disgusting!
