Overspending/Overeating Link?

Does anyone else find they have a link with losing control of budgeting and losing control of eating healthily?

I dont mean that food is what I overspend on, I mean that when I feel determined to budget well, I automatically eat more healthily and loose weight. The reverse has happened too in the past. I have decided to manage my diet better, and automatically started thinking about managing money better as well!

I guess it's about taking control of life in general?

A physiologist would probably have a field day!!:rotfl:

When I'm losing control of, well, life... interest in cooking is one of the first things to go, which means more ready meals (if I'm lucky) & more takeaways (if I'm not) or sometimes just not really eating much of anything. So if the first 2 happen then the budget flies out the window and the waistline expands at the same time. Occasionally we get the 3rd scenario where the budget isn't really troubled but I can't say that weightloss really happens!

First sign that I'm getting back in control of everything is when there is fresh food in the fridge and a plan for what to do with it on the blackboard! Control of the budget lags behind because there's usually a degree of wastage and re-stocking first!

For me, I don't stop cooking, in fact I cook more extravagant dishes and my extra spending could be on clothes, house etc as opposed to takeaways/ready meals (although I probably would lunch out more whilst shopping!). It just seems as though my brain links budgeting cash to 'budgeting' calories!

This connection has only recently dawned on me and even I find the realisation bizarre!

ETA The reason I am posting this on Old Style is I am avidly reading everything here to get myself back on the right track with budgeting. If my theory is right, then I will get healthier too!

My food budget is down and I eat less but am not hungry so I think I am eating enough, it's not exactly a loss of appetite but I suspect there is probably some sign of depression lurking...but as said elsewhere my meals are mainly salad sandwiches, salads, cereal, fruit and milk and for a cooked meal it is usual in a slow cooker and is a stew or casserole.

  • Popperwell. I am sorry to hear there may be an element of depression in the way you are feeling. Please get help quickly if you start to feel any worse.

    Thank you Jeannie,
I am not as bad as some and must not overplay it and come across as sorry for myself but you cannot decide when you will get something like this. It may be grief and I may find my way through it but it cannot do any harm to seek help.

If I seek help I must not see it as giving in or defeat. I hear that usually a bereavement usually hits after a fair bit of time.

In my favour I am eating and I am keeping interested in the internet, listening to the radio and the music we shared, though I am not a big TV fan I can now watch some TV again so these are positive signs.

Anyhow back to the topic of your thread...I have a good variety of food in the house and I am determined to make some lovely meals. I have lost weight but thankfully I am maintaining my weight and not losing too much...to some extent I miss cooking for someone else and doing so just for myself.

I remember Alvin Hall (remember him) in his book saying that if you control your budget you will lose weight. I thought he was mad but found that it was true, basically because i stopped buying snacks, (unnessesary,) bought only enough food to feed the family and stopped throwing their leftovers in the bin (me) and generally swithout trying lost over a stone So maybe there is some thing in it.

Teeni, I agree...until recently when I mentioned possible medical problems I ate(and I still do)good food and I have had all the vitamins and minerals that I should and the weight has come off easily and now I find it is easy to maintain my present weight.

    THANK YOU!!!
I didn't think I was mad exactly, but a bit odd definitely! I have lived long enough now to have discovered this eat/spend link about myself for sure. Only thing I wasn't clear about was the reason! I am a self confessed control freak and these are two areas I allow to get away from me on occasion.

Popperwell, I have never suffered from depression, thankfully, and I don't know your story, but I do know there is real strength in firstly recognising what your needs may be, and secondly, taking the steps you need to make yourself well. Self analysis is not a bad thing, it's where my original post came from!
