300 (PSP)
300, the film, was everything we’d hoped it to be. Gory, violent, relentless and obscenely gorgeous in its presentation, reflecting its graphic novel heritage, we were mesmerized by every second of it.
Seeing the game arrive, we knew it would have to be very special to live up to our expectations. And to be perfectly honest, discovering that the game was only destined for PSP did fill us with doubt. Just how was the handheld going to cope with that scale of warfare?
Deep breath; well, quite simply, it doesn’t quite fill all of our expectations. The first, and most glaringly obvious fact about March To Glory (particularly to fans of the film and novel) is that the battles really aren’t big enough. Wave upon wave of Persian slave attack, but rarely are there more than six of them, and equally rarely is there any more than yourself, King Leonidas, and one Spartan Warrior battling against them.
Initially, we’ve got to admit, we found this a problem. The main storyline is that Leonidas and his band of 300 Spartans (the descendants of Hercules) faced up to Xerxes’ army of over a million. These are truly staggering odds which simply aren’t possible to recreate on any handheld.
But stick with it, and 300 soon sinks its hooks into you. Essentially the game is just about hacking and slashing your way through whatever Persians are thrown at you. There’s enough depth to the combo lists and weapon choices to make the game enjoyable. And using spears to tackle shielded infantry and swords to cut through the grunts, the tactics involved are easy to grasp, effective and rewarding too.
As with most ‘slasher’ games, there are other kinds of incentive to keep the blood flowing, with unlockable weapons, armour, combos and additional videos to enjoy too.
However, the main reason to get 300 March to Glory is surely for the main game itself. With a chance to relive the Spartan’s finest hours, and explore more of their journey to the Hot Gates, this is surely a must-have game for any PSP owning 300 fan.
1. What is the name of the God-King who leads the Persian army to destroy Leonidis’ precious Greece?
Xerxes
Hercules
Zeus
