  • The chap who put my new kitchen in for me also put in my loft ladder. It took him a day to do. I previously had a few quotes all ranging between £190 and £215. Mark was able to do it for £180. He did a good job, arrived on time, worked solidly, had 1 half hour break and cleaned up after himself.
His number is 07966 901547. He's based in Dundonald but does travel.

I put in a new ladder a few years ago. I got it from B&Q for about £110 which included all the fittings and trap door etc. The trap door was longer and thinner than the original trap door so quite a lot of work involved in making a new opening in the ceiling. So I would say £200 would be a bit of a bargain to get one installed unless you happen to have a hatch matching the exact dimensiions of the new ladder's hatch dimensions.

We did out own like you, bought a ladder, fitted it and then trimmed down the cover added hinges and a catch. We also added beading so it looked better than a plain piece of wood on the ceiling. Probably a few hours work and then a quick paint and wait for it to dry.
Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.

{sigh} let me break the time line down for you............
    He arrived at 09:15hrs.
Short chat with me confirming the type of ladder I wanted. (One of the other companies had recommended a cheaper aluminium ladder, Mark had recommended a heavier wooden one and justified his argument to me.)
Further inspection of the existing loft hatch and checked measurements. Off then to buy the loft ladder.
Back about 30minutes later. Everything unloaded and work began.
Approx new ladder installed and (excuse the non technical language) architrave like frame around the hatch to make it look better. Dusting, hoovering and cleaning up before primer applied to the bare wood. Approx 2.30pm this work was complete and he went off for lunch. Back again approx 4.30pm to put a coat of white paint on to the architrave stuff and the trap door.
For me this was a day's work. Obviously if you are going to do the primer and painting stuff yourself then it would be complete in a shorter time.
One further point. Your post says "we" and the company in Carryduff also mentioned that there would be 2 people working on installation so I suppose it would be installed quicker if you have help.
Mark came recommended to me and I am pleased with the standard of his work.

I got an attic ladder fitted recently and the guys did a great job. They quoted me £295 over the phone and when they came to measure up I expected it to be more as I needed a light fitting and smoke alarm moved to make room for the new hatch. They didnt charge any extra! All done in a morning and a really clean, professional job

Bought one from B&Q (similar to http://www.diy.com/nav/build/ladders/loft-ladders/loft_ladders/Abru-Blue-Seal-Complete-Loft-Access-Kit-H-111-W-55cm-9273865?skuId=9283565). Local handyman fitted it in half a day or less including moving a light for £25
