Interview Question... Opinions plz

I'm taking a look at other jobs at the moment and I have two primary motivations:

1) I'm substantially underpaid.
2) My current company is looking a bit flaky, and although I'm not in immediate danger of redundancy, I wouldn't bet on still being around in 12 months time if things don't improve.

I've just been thinking about how I'd answer it if I were to be asked why I want to leave my current company.

I know the stock response is 'new challenge blah blah', but I've not been in my current role all the long (under 12 months), and have been at the company for only a couple of years. Would it be a good idea to mention either of the above (probably point 2 more than point 1) to fill out the answer to this question? I'm a bit concerned about appearing disloyal, as in all my proper jobs to date I've always left at the 2-3 year mark (always for good reasons, and not without trying to resolve them with the companies concerned first). I don't really like telling lies in interviews.

  • I would mention your job is at risk (even if it isnt) and you want some stability/long term and how the new role matches your skills and aspirations

I would maybe just say you have concerns about job stability and aspire to work in -new company- because you could see a long term future in their company because of xyz good points about new company. Don't say anything bad about current employers as the interviews would then think you could do the same if working for their company.

Don't say that. You'll open a whole can of worms like why is your job at risk? Are you a trouble employee? Are you underperforming? Do you not get on with your manager? Do you not get on with your colleagues? Have you made a serious mistake or series of small mistakes already leading you to believe you might lose your job?
  • Focus on the future and what you want to get in the new role, as opposed to what you don't like at your current place. "I am looking to leave as i am trying to find a role/company that offers me ....."
