Is there 53 weeks in a year?

I am employed by a company that does all my taxes and National Insurance Contributions for me.

I have recently worked abroad for 2 weeks for the company and when I got back handed my time sheets in to wages. I am paid weekly and got my pay slip last week only to find out it was for week 53 and for some reason got stung into paying a lot of tax.

Details:

Week 53
Weeks wage 1921.75
Tax 608.56
NIC 73.05

Gross pay 26152.93
Tax 4400.76
NIC 1658.33
Tax Code 513L

Could someone please be kind enough to work out how much Tax I should have paid and if it is wrong what do I do to claim it back.

Thanks.

There can be 53 weeks in a tax year depensing on what day of the week you get paid and what day of the week the tax year starts. (plus this tax year due to the easter break coming when it did, employers paying people on or before 09/04/07 were allowed to pay these payments in the 06/07 tax year, this could be why you have been paid under week 53 rules)

However, it does seem that you may have paid approx £35 too much. You should have paid£4365.

513L is what it says on my wage slip. Is it wrong?
