Inform them you can be flexible within your agreed 16hrs.

If they have a business need for you to be on-site for 30hrs, they should have recruited for that level - they are trying to be fly by having you at their beck and call with all the flexibility coming from the employee without commitment from the employer.

They will likely calculate your holiday entitlement based around 16hrs.

I don;t mind about the holiday thing, i really just need my 16 hours, 4 x 4hour shifts because i really do need to do my volunteering, which I explained to them. But they will have none of it.

I've been there 3 weeks and seem to be getting all the hours no one wants.

It costs me £100 a month to travel to the place and I bloody hate it.

The job makes me feel like crap.It really is destroying my soul

If you don't really need the money, walk away - lifes too short.

Life really is far too short. That's the thought that's been killing me everytime I'm in the shop. Thank you

These days employers have twisted the meaning of 'flexible' to mean: we'll put you down for all sorts of hours on all sorts of days and shifts, without warning. If you're not flexible, the next sucker will be.

It's something that's crept in in the last 8-10 years.

Years ago you'd do a part-time job and know which hours/days you were working (e.g. the initial advert would have said Mon-Thu mornings) ... and beyond that you'd be asked.... now it's a lottery with everybody "flexible" and no warning.

IMHO it sucks and stops people being in control of their lives or being able to dovetail 2-3 jobs together.

It's really rubbish. I have a lot of different things going on in life that stress me out OUTSIDE of work, (a health issue to do with my back, volunteering and getting personal statements and references ready for uni application, my fiance joining the military, a stressful family living environment so I really don't need the hassle of managers telling me i MUST do what hours they put me down for and it can't be changed. I'm 22 years old and feel like I'm 16 again.

Just get your head down, do the work, learn and maybe one day you can run your own business all thanks to a few extra hours at Clintons

Whatever you do don't listen to righteous union idiots who bleat about rules/reg etc. They are all skint and live in Liverpool and Glasgow so there so called ethics have done them not an ounce of good

Run my own business from learning that the general public are ignorant, employers are sneaky and unfair and that I'm not worth anything more than minimum wage? Cos I haven't learnt much else. Clinton's are notoriously bad to work for.

    What are you on about?

OP - just do your 16 hours and say no to any extra. At least if they decide to let you go then you have stood up to them. If they don't know their business well enough to recruit for the hours they need then that's their look out.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
