How long before I should launch a dispute with PayPal

At the end of last week I ordered some goods from a website.
There was nothing stating they did not have stock of the item. Now because I had not used this site before I decided as they took PayPal as one of the payment options I would use this. That way should they be a less than reputable company I am covered.
The money was taken from my account as soon as I paid. I was OK with this (I know some companies won't take a PayPal payment until the order is ready to dispatch), as that way I know its paid and out the way.
On Monday morning I had an email saying the manufacturer had discontinued the item and offering alternatives made by them. I immediately declined and stated I wanted a refund.
Lunchtime today I sent another message asking if they could please advise when the refund would be issued through PayPal so I can buy the product (although more expensive) elsewhere.
I was wondering how much longer should I give them prior to starting a dispute with PayPal to get the money back.
I know it is only approx 36 hours since being told they did not have the goods but I have a real issue with companies listing things for sale that they do not have in stock without a message stating this is the case and taking the consumers money. Or in this case the product is not only out of stock it is actually discontinued and still listed for sale (even at the time of posting this) and they have still taken my money before they told me its not available.
