Hi all,
My niece is 15 and at the moment she's currently visiting different colleges and considering what she wants to do academically when she finishes school to hopefully get her a job she wants at the end of it all.
She's wanting to look in more detail at different professions, careers and jobs but she's finding it hard to do this.
Can anyone recommend some site(s) that provide information about careers and in particular what the jobs entail and what's needed to get into them. Once she finds some she's interested in she's then getting to look into what qualifications / path she needs to take to hopefully get the career she wants.
She's been to the local job centre plus asked at school etc but she's struggling to to find anything.
Many thanks

Maybe next step, they have a questionaire type of thing you fill in and gives ideas what you could do. Maybe connexions would be able to help.0

She needs to work out what she enjoys doing. What are her passions? Make that the first step, then the next will be to start narrowing down the potential job fields to include those passions. There are a LOT of different jobs out there and if she's trying to look at everything i'm not surprised she's getting nowhere fast.
Oh and forget the job centre, they're generally quite useless.0 -
This is a great website designed for that age, I have linked you to the DNA test which gives some great ideas about what type of work might suit in the results. Try it yourself, it's good fun.

Connexions have a career guidance service for young people.
Also if she went to her local library they'll have loads of career guides with info on different jobs.
How terrible that her school can't help her!Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j
OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.
Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0 -
Prospects.ac.uk has already been recommended to look at options with degree subjects. I'd also suggest looking at http://www.prospects.ac.uk/types_of_jobs.htm to explore job sectors and types of jobs
Also, http://www.prospects.ac.uk/myprospects_planner_login.htm, is an online tool that allows you to consider what skills, interests and motivations relating to work are important to you and suggests career options that might fit those elements.0 -
This site has details of various NHS Careers:
