sia licence

I was told by my work programme provider this morning I can attend a course to get a sia licence. What I didn't ask was how long is the course going to be? Has anyone here got a clue how long the course will be.

  • It will be the Level 2 Award in Door Supervision, probably through the awarding body, BIIAB. This is the minimum needed to be able to apply for the SIA licence. Minimum contact is 30 hours so likely to be 1 week full time, possibly stretching to two weeks at less than full time.

It makes me laugh the way the SIA licences are just touted around for free to anyone who is unemployed these days.
It is happening in my area and my husband who has held one for the last 7 years( and paid £250 for the pleasure every 3 years) cannot get a job using his for love nor money because literally everyone has got one.

I dont know how they expect anyone to find employment in this area anymore and more to the point people who actually WANT to work in this area because they ENJOY the work cant because people are using it as a way to get the DWP off their backs.

Our JCP has a very good Labour market intelligence system where they wont refer people onto courses that dont have a strong chance of getting employment.

It's the one of only two free courses that are run by the work programme provider and the other is a cscs card so I guess those who are working in construction can say the same as what you have said. Also it depends on what area of the country you live in.I want the licence because it is free and there seems to be quite a few jobs that require the licence.

I want the licence as security work can offer the flexibilty I need right now. There is also alot of competition for jobs in every area of employment not just security.

Dont get me wrong its great that you can get the training for free and im glad its a job that will work well for you but we live in Merseyside and jobs of any kind are scarce but when you hold a licence that you have paid for and expect to be able to use and cant its a little unfair.

We have a training agency near us and as you said all they have in the window is adverts for SIA and CSCS. Now the type of person that gets sent there are young people who probably wouldnt bother but for the DWP getting on their backs and when they get free training and for some reason get employment over someone with experience its crazy.
We have seen a steady rise in shops and clubs in the area with security/door supervisors of a very young age and im sure this is the reason.

My husband would love to use his licence but as ive said before he NEVER gets any replies to his applications yet there are positions being filled all the time.
