Consultation period

After years of lurking on these boards I seem to be constantly badgering people for help and advice lately.
I am being made redundant. The consultation perion began today.
I would be grateful if anyone could tell me the minimum period the law says the consultation period should last.
To put not to fine a point on it, the longer I and my workmates can spin it out, the longer before we start our actual notice period. A few weeks extra pay might make all the difference to us.

I'll be starting that journey soon as well. From memory I think the consultation period is 90 days. You would be better of searching on the net for more clarification. Try the Department of Work & Pensions web site for info. It should have all the legal stuff. Also if you are in a trade union ask them as well.

More information is needed for an appropriate answer however consultation should begin at least 30 days before the frst redundancies start (the number of employees concerned can affect this though).

I'll post a link giving greater detail for you to read later.

Thank you ohreally. I have looked online but because its less than 20 employees involved I cant find a definitive answer.

    Hi wageslave,

As I understand it, if fewer than 100 employees are to be made redundant, the 90 days rule does not apply, so in this case I believe the minimum is 30 days.

    Good luck.

  • If there are fewer than 20 employees, there is no legally mandatory minimum. That's why you couldn't find a definite answer.

    About two weeks is common.
