I just posted about Post Pals where you choose a poorly child, their sibling or a child whose sibling has passed away and send them a little box of at Christmas (or any time of the year) to make them smile and let them know someone cares

If anyone knows of somewhere that does this Id be really interested as I often think of those living on the streets but you very rarely see anyone homeless around here so I cant give to them iyswim. I would love to give to a charity who'd distribute them for me to those who need them.Does anybody have a link to an appeal that helps the homeless in the uk? It's not in anyway meant to be derogatory to the above mentioned charities I just felt tonight was so cold and frosty and thought of the poor souls living rough and wondered if there was anything an individual could offer, gloves hat ?
I do shoeboxes for operation christmas child. I have read up on the religious side, theres so much conflicting information though. I will keep doing them as I cant help but feel its only the children missing out if I stopped. Im also an elf/reindeer to 4 children from postpals.

Thank you for the mary's meals link. I have sent a donation and hope to donate 2 backpacks this year. I couldn't see if you can donate individually though or if it has to be via a school.DFW NERD NO.656 DEBT FREE 24TH NOVEMBER 2010 TOTAL DEBT AUGUST 2007 £39000MFiT T2 NO.56 WE OWN [STRIKE]25%[/STRIKE] 31.5% OF OUR HOUSE SO FAR!0

This year OH and I have put together shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child for the first time. We'd never heard of it before - a lady at work put out an email asking if anybody would like to give some as she organises a mass collection/donation via her church. We are not at all religious, but I was immediately drawn to the idea, because it seems a lovely thing to do for a child that is small for us but perhaps much bigger for them.
I had read that a leaflet/stories would be added to the box but in all honesty, I didn't think anything sinister of it, or that it would come with pressure. I am sure there is a lot of literature debating about the idea, and I may read around, but for now I am happy in knowing that a few children will know someone thought of them.
The boxes are all wrapped up downstairs now and I'll be dropping them off next week.0 -

I prefer to donate to those who really need it. Our troops, whilst doing a wonderful job, choose to join the forces and get paid to do their job. Children in poor areas of the world don't have nearly as much as most people in this country, and don't choose their lives.
I like the Romania link and it's one I've not come across before. We're already doing Operation Christmas Child, but I think we might do something for Romanian familes and the elderly as well.0 -
Hi
I've read through this thread, & just feel I want to add my comments. I'm involved in the Operation Christmas Child appeal, as the church I go to is a checking & clearing centre for boxes. No literature is put into the boxes - the children can't read English anyway - so what's the point!
Every year we are amazed at the generous gifts people give. Boxes are sent & distributed without anything being added to them. Please continue to give, if not to this appeal then to whatever you feel comfortable with. Every box makes a difference to someones life.0 -

I'm also interested in doing this instead of sending cards to colleagues at work (really, what's the point??) I also am unable to see how you drop off or deliver your back packs though??Now thanks to Tommix & Queen Bear, now Lady Westy of Woodpecker

I have been supporting OCC for quite a few years and there is a booklet given to children in christian countries ONLY. The boxes are often distributed through schools and the teachers use the book as a resource for a lesson which we know as RS. It is not given out in non christian countries.
I love doing my shoeboxes and feel humbled when watching the videos of the children receiving their boxes. Such small gifts mean so much to them. D x0
