help from crafters please?

im after some varnish (preferably spray) to put a finish on some christmas placemats im making.
can anyone reccomend a cheap but effective varnish to use?

if it helps its to go on the cork bottomed, laminated (but will be sanded down and spray painted) topped place mats

At school we always used watered down pva, loads of crafters use modgpodg but others say its like pva

i would love to see your finished project.. i'm going to be giving placemats a try this weekend. I am going to use old tiles and stick images onto them and then spray them with varnish :j
