Complicated tax return

I'd suggest that you spend a little of your redundancy payment seeing an accountant so that you can be talked through what goes where on the tax return.0

I was waiting for that one! Serves me right for getting uppity!!
Like most people on here I'm looking for advice and trying to help others as I go along. Was I wrong to come on here looking for simple advice before paying an accountant?
I thought this forum was about moneysaving?0 -

Lots of us complete a self assessment each year and have advice to share but as you are so rude I think I'll take my advice elsewhere. If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -

I wasn't intending to be anything other than helpful, your situation sounds complicated so I felt that sitting down with an accountant would be a better option than trying to get advice from people who don't have access to the full information. If you disagree with that suggestion that's up to you.0 -

I do fully understand self-assessment and how to complete the forms hence my post. I was trying to ensure you weren't doing anything you didn't need to do.
This is the additional information page.

Read box 7 - "If you have left box 6 blank because the tax deducted is included in box 2 of the employment page put X in the box"
So you see you don't need to separate the tax on the redundancy from the total tax deducted. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

This forum is about moneysaving, however at the same time, few of us are tax professionals.
I had 2 additional sheets to send with my tax return this year for the 'other' section, and what saved me more tax than I spent (by far) was seeing an accountant. This sounds a complicated case, and one that I wouldn't wish to advise on for this reason, without having a thorough understanding of your tax needs.

My tax return can be quite lengthy as it has a few different sections (employement, self employement, land and property, capital gains tax plus all the other usual ones interest, dividends etc.) although after selling off a business it has become a bit simpler. In the past when I wasn't sure about something (after reading the relevant Inland Revenue leaflet so that I could talk intelligently about it) I simply called the Inland Revenue and discussed it with a tax inspector. I have found them to be extremely helpful.Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0

I would suggest that the government gets a grip on on the world's second most complex tax system and starts cleaning it up, so that the questions are intelligible to the ordinary citizen.
Having ploughed through the additional information sheet, I soon came to the conclusion that it had been included to protect the back sides of the inspectors, and if I did not understand the purpose of the question, it could not apply to me.
[Most of the questions are aimed at known "loopholes"/"anomalies"]0 -
To get back on track, have you already been officially sent the self assessment forms and given a tax payer number?
If so you are running out of time for a manual return and so have a choice of going for the on-line system or sending in something with a covering letter.
Don't expect sensible personal service at the other end, with a bit of overall understanding and lea way. - those days are over.0
