Car Insurance complaints

Hi everyone,
I have had my own policy with Tesco Car Insurance since 2002 however in 2006 was charged with no insurance by the CPS. Tesco had, without permission changed car details. At the time it was classed as an admin error. In any event they would not give me a letter to take to court to confirm I had a current policy and I was left with an IN10 on my driving licence (lucky it was not taken off me).
My premiums trebled from 2007 until 2012 and I was unable to get any insurance from anywhere else and therefore had to stay with Tesco. I still have an ongoing battle with them and they will not send me a final letter to my original complaint so I can go the Financial Ombudsmen, I have tried but they want a copy of final letter that Tesco say they sent out in 2007??!!
Has anyone else had similar problems with car insurance?

You dont need a final letter. If the company doesnt resolve it within 8 weeks, you have the right to refer your case to the FOS at that point.

However, seeing as your complaint was in 2007, the FOS seem to doubt whether you have rights of access to them as you normally only get 6 months after Tescos response.

Your issue seems to be that Tesco are saying they issued a final letter and you are saying they didnt get it. As it is around 66 months past the 6 month deadline to refer to the FOS, the FOS cannot deal with the complaint unless Tesco failed to issue the correct letter. Hence why they want to see it.

Ask Tesco for a copy of the final letter.

  • I have sent numerous letters requesting a copy of the "final letter", this is why the complaint has gone on for so long, they have sent letter back stating they will send a copy but I never receive them?!!

You cannot go to FOS as you are way past the 6 month deadline. If you did go within the 6 months, they would have just obtained a copy of the final response from them directly anyway.

From what the OP is saying, it seems he never got sent an FRL at all. That being so, he should simply go to FOS and say that repeated requests for one have been ignored - and provide copies of those requests.

OP said Tesco said they issued it in 2007. But it could still have been referred to FOS without it as they would have obtained the copy. It's also too late now.
