Chasing a debt but they don't know what for?

I had a letter the other day from a debt company chasing up a debt, I duly called them this morning when their offices were opened and was told that I had opened an account at Dixonx or Currys and had an outstanding amount of £1310. Now I am on a repayment plan with payplan so am not running from my debts but know nothing about this debt?

They confirmed my current and previous address and the date but could not tell me exactly what the account was for. Now 2 weeks previously I purchased a computer from PC World and after a few months had to change a bank account and duly passed these details on to other creditors including the PC but nothing ever happened so am not going to go out of my way to chase people up if they are not clever enough to action it themselves.

Should the debt company know precisely what it is the debt relates too? I have a receipt of when I purchased the computer but its date is about 14-16 days out plus not sure if PC World are connected to Dixons via HFC. Like I said I have no problem responding to the debt if it is indeed mine albeit on a payment plan which I am sure will please them but they wanted me to start paying straight away and send them my ID to prove who I am which I have refused to do(not in the habit of posting my ID through the post).

pcworld, dixons and currys are all the same company, and all use HFC bank for finance, so it most likely is that debt.

Ok cool, thought as much and like I said happy to pay up, but just thought that they would be a bit more forthcoming as opposed to being quite vague.

It shouldn't be up to you to find out what the debt is anyway.. i'd have thought they had to provide that information? i'm not sure though, but i am sure that someone who does know will be along shortly!

    1. So... do you MEAN 2 weeks? Cause I was getting all steamed up about this... buying a computer when on a DMP thing... but I guess it might be a typo:)

    2. You are under no obligation to send them proof of ID. They are under an obligation to supply you with a true copy of the Credit Agreement, and a statement of account for £1. The letter is http://www.nationaldebtline.co.uk/england_wales/temp/7743_31121.pdf . You need to send it recorded delivery.

It'll be the PC. Be aware that the finance you have with HFC is nothing to do with PCWorld. HFC would simply have bought the debt from them just after the transaction went through which is why the date is a little out.
Debt as at 12th July 2006 - £61,345
    Debt free 21st Oct 2011.

    All thanks to :money:

Chill dude, I mentioned about being on a DMP to emphasise the point that I dont run from my debts. The 2 weeks was the difference between the date they had and the receipt for the computer which I purchased about 2 years before going on a DMP.

Perish the thought about you getting steamed up about nothing!

Thanks for clearing that up. I was also wondering how someone could forget about buying a computer on hp 2 weeks after buying it:D
