Tax Codes/Benefits

Hello all,

Been a long time since I frequented these forums. My life has improved dramatically since the opening thread I made!

As such, I now have accommodation I can call my own and have started a new job. I am eternally thankful to anyone and everyone who has helped me, no matter how small it was. Just felt I had to get that out of the way!

Anyway, I am currently working for a very small company (<10 employee's) and I need a bit of help with regards to tax and whatnot. I have left the world of JSA behind thankfully and I am due to get paid this coming Friday (work pay us for the whole month, midway through the month - bizarre to say the least!); unfortunately I do not have my P45 yet so now I'm unsure what to do? Can I simply fill in a P60 and that will solve my problems? What rate would I be taxed at? I haven't worked since the new tax year and I'm on less than 20k....

Now for the benefits part..sadly I went to Prison in April this year for 13 days. My JSA claim was stopped, so technically I would guess that I've been on benefits since April 27th (when I restarted the claim). Given it's nearly been 6 months, is there any sort of help I'm entitled too? In an ideal world I wouldn't have to ask, but when I see others using the system to its fullest it seems naive for me not too.

For those who are struggling and can't find a way out, hang in there. I got there in the end and so shall you. Be the master of all that you can control, know you are doing your best and the rest will take care of itself.

Thanks in advance.

Regarding tax, the JC will send you a P45 which you should give to your employer, in the meantime you need to get onto emergency tax or you will pay 20% tax on all earnings. This is done by filling in a P46, if you have done this allready you should be on emergency tax for your first wage otherwise ask for one and fill it in so that it can be applied on your next wage.
    Link to P46 if needed....

    Sorry no idea about benefits.
  • Congratulations in the amazing steps you're taking to turn your life around. You should be very proud of yourself.

I'm a little confused as to what benefits you are talking about. You are now employed and earning a wage. Is that wage not enough to live on/pay the bills? There is a benefits calculator on here where you can input your status and income and it will tell you if you're likely to be entitled to anything. If you live alone, you could get a 25% discount off your council tax, but if you are single, under 35 and have no dependents I would doubt there would be anything else available unless your wages are seriously low. Keep doing what you are doing though - sounds like you are doing really well.
