I was foolish enough to install the McAfee QuickClean program from last month's PcPro DVD. I decided I didn't want to use it so uninstalled it. Found it still kept trying to get to the Internet to update the 'Security Center' (thanks Zonealarm for telling me). McAfee have a program on their site to completely remove it so downloaded and ran that.
Guess what? Security Center is still trying to access the McAfee site for updates.
I've removed everything from startup which might be doing it and also deleting any executable files I can find.
Other than hitting my laptop with a hammer anyone know what I can do to eliminate this rubbish?

Nice to save.

You could use system restore to roll back your system to before the install.
Otherwise, click start>run and type msconfig
Under the startup tab uncheck anything mcafee related0 -
I used to like Mcafee a couple of years ago but it all went the way of Symantec. All bloated and interfering.
A temporary solution is this:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx
You can see everything which starts up during the boot process, just delete anything looking like Security Centre or McAfee.0 -

... try the above first (if you didnt.. i know you ran the removal tool, but just encase you ran the wrong one)0 -
Also, look for any services from Network Associates or NAI.
You can see a list of services using msconfig
Follow these steps:- Click Start
- Click Run
- Type msconfig.exe
- Click on the Services tab
- Click on the Services column header (sorts list A-Z)
- Scroll down, look for McAfee, NAI, or Network Associates
- Uncheck any appropriate Services
Hope this helps!!
