Jaffa cakes have very little to do with RnD - I just used the comparison style of question, that's all. And I was presenting to a top 50 law firm - the question was actually "law firm - business or profession?"
I know nothing of RnD so would not know where to start and would probably be cheesy, I'm afraid...0 -
I have to do one in a few weeks time on what my plan is for the first 30 days.
Any suggestions?
How about you start by thinking about what your plan for the first 30 days actually is, then build a presentation around that?
None of us know anything about the company, the role, or your plans for the first 30 days, so it's going to be difficult for us to come up with the ideas for you.
If you could make some suggestions as to the key points you want to get across, there may be someone creative here who can come up with an attention-grabbing way of making it memorable.0 -
Fair enough......role is a middle manager role in a large manufacturing company in the R&D department.
I think the point I want to get across is that R&D is hard, costs lots of money and can be unsuccessful many times. R&D is more than just technology - there needs to be a culture, will and a compelling need. It also needs to link to the high level strategy of the business and ensure there are linkages to the vision of the business.
Make sure people are motivated, know what they are doing, have a clear vision and a will to make change....
In a snapshot thats what I want to tell them.....
Ironic that I am least innovative person in the world !!!0 -

That's all well and good, but does it actually address the question of what your plan is for the first 30 days. You need to tie it in somewhere to keep it 'on topic'.0 -
Interesting to see that as a mid-manager in the R&D department of a large manufacturing company you see yourself as, "least innovative person in the world !!!". You should fit right in.
Seriously you will be in the position of investing in projects and picking winners, that generally means balancing those with the best patter against those with the most sustainable and profitable ideas. Very few innovative projects make it, the best VCs have a 1 in 7 strike rate so in your position it would be all about the risk/reward strategy for the company as a whole.0
