Help please - computer won't switch on!!

Thank you again to everyone who has responded to my question - I have been off work for a while and, as i don't have a computer at home, this is the first chance I've had to respond!

In answer to CHRI5's questions, I can get the BIOS information on the screen if I press del and, yes, the computer beeps when it is switching on. The CPU fan is working and I have cleaned out all the dust from inside (suprisingly, it wasn't too bad!). If it is in BIOS mode it stays switched on with no problems.

I tried to switch it on in safe mode but this didn't work.

I think i'm going to have to take it in somewhere for a professional to look at it but thanks to everyone for all your help.
