Any school cleaners on here????

Just wondered if school cleaning jobs are only advertised on local council websites, and what are the holidays, i am assuming there's a big clean during the 6 weeks....are big cleans done on the same hours as normal...ie round here the cleaning jobs are either 6-8am or 3.30-5.30pm ish or do you work longer hours with there being no kids there and bigger jobs needing doing???
Also do they spread your wages over the weeks you may not be there if you get some of the school holidays off???
Any other info would be great...i have just a few weeks ago started a support worker job, i am enjoying it but i did say i only needed a few hours, and now 3 weeks in i am told i will have to work every other weekend, and i am still doing the other hours in the week, so think i will stay here and see how it goes until after xmas but if a cleaning job in school comes along after xmas then i will try for that.

A lot of your questions can't really be answered. It all depends on the school. Most use agencies now, although some still employ direct.
It is all according to which of these the school employ, to what your hours and pay will be.
If it is an agency your holiday pay will not cover all of your time off. You will most probably run out in the 6 weeks.

All schools do a deep clean, but again the amount of hours, and when they are differs between schools.

Thanks i was aware different counties may have different ways, just more so wanted to know re the school hols as i still have one child in primary, we are currently trying to juggle working hours between me and hubby to always have some one here for him.
Also although i have only just started the support working job its a killer on the car milage, and 15p per mile is not good:(

As own my own said it really depends on the school. It depends if its scotland, england etc and which council. Where we are wages are paid per hour worked term-time but wages split and paid over 52 weeks including holiday pay. There is no 'big clean' in summer, just need to work harder on the lead up now, cut backs! Although if building maintenance is being done over the summer you may be asked to go in to do some OT. I am a School cleaner. I work from 3.30pm-5.30pm. They pro ratio your wages so that you get paid the same amount each month all year. I have to go in one day for my 2 hours in the October half term. During the 6 week summer hols you have to go in one day for cleaning day. Some areas may be different though.

Schools in different areas will have different ways of doing things.

In the School I work in the cleaners work 2.30pm-5.45pm. The holidays are 21 days per year and then theres a few public holidays which they get paid for as well.

During the summer time when there are no Kids at the School there is a big summer clean which envolves EVERYTHING being deep cleaned including the walls , desks , ledges , chairs , skirting boards doors and door frames etc. The floors will also be stripped and re-polished.

Depending on the caretaker , you may be allowed to work different hours during the summer . In the School I work in the cleaners work Monday to Thursday 8.30am-12.30pm getting Friday of each week off , but again , as I say this is done at the discretion of the caretaker.

Because the cleaners in my School work for the full 52 weeks of the year (except for when they take their annual leave) their pay is the same each month , they are paid every 4th Friday at a rate of £7.84 per hour.

Not all schools will have the same policy but in the one I work in the cleaners are only allowed to take 7 days of annual leave during times when the school is on as when a cleaner is off on holiday their section has to be covered by the other cleaners and this can put strain on the cleaners trying to clean their own section of the school on top of the section belonging to the cleaner who is off. The remaining 14 days annual leave has to be taken when the school is off (eg easter , halloween , during the summer break). Our school closes down completely over the xmas holidays so you have to take those days off out of your annual leave , you dont have a choice about this.

I'm a school cleaner, although I work in a boarding school, I work term time only, between 08:30 and 12:30, my wages are averaged out overtly year so I get the same amount each month

My MIL is a cleaner in our local primary school. Employed directly by them rather than agency.
They do double-hours for a fortnight during the summer 6-week break. This, in effect, covers them for 4 of the 6 weeks. The remaining 2 of the 6 weeks is taken as annual leave.

They get paid the same each month, regardless of holidays, etc.
