Quit my job

Hi, i just quit my job recently because I couldn't afford the travel and my wages were commission based.

The advert of the job that I applied for clearly stated a salary and never mentioned anything of earnings being commission based. As well as stated on the ad the job title was a "Telesales marketer" which I am pretty sure means call centre work unlike the "Field Representative" job that was mentioned on the open day. I'm really nervous because I've already spoken to Job Centre Plus about quitting my job and they said that if I was employed by the company I was working for then I could be sanctioned for up to 25 weeks.

I'm pretty sure that if wages were commission based wouldn't that not mean that I should be classed as Self Employed? I'm really confused and worried about all this as it is the first proper job that I had ever took and my shifts were 12 hours a day. But because I live 20 odd miles away from the work place I had to be up and ready for eight oclock in the morning and sometimes when I finished I wasn't getting back until about midnight one in the morning and having to practise my sales pitch I wasn't really getting to sleep until 2/3 in the morning. Can anyone advise me here on what I can do because it's really stressing me out.

  • Ah the good old telesales job. Recession or no recession, you can always find job advertised as "Telesales - Earn £500-600 OTE", when in reality you'll do nothing of the sort.

Where did you see the job advertised anddo you have a copy of it?
Have you signed a contract with this employer and do you have a copy?
How long did you work there before you quit? How did you quit?
How long was the travel time to and from your place of work?
Do you have evidence of the comission payment structure and that it would enable you to earn the equivalent of the National Minimum wage?
What were the workplace conditions like?

You can still get JSA if you can show that you had good cause to leave, so draw up a list of all the reasons (the more the better) that the job was unsuitable.
