RBS pre-employment checks

I just thought I would share my experience with you.

I recently applied for a job with RBS. I was success at the face to face interview and offered a conditional position subject to the pre- employment screening.

I had also applied for another two jobs, both which I was successful for. one with Barclays who also completed the pre-employment checks - Sucessfully!!

So, on finding out I was being offered the job with RBS, I turned down both other jobs I had been offered, both which were due to start Monday gone.

Two days ago I received a letter from RBS to say that on the credit check they did, they have received adverse information for the credit reference agencies, and that I could obtain copies of my file by contacting Equifax and Experian. No contact number to speak to RBS about the matter. The letter was very to the point, "you have failed.....thank you for your interest in RBS.....best of luck for future" sort of thing.

I called equifax and Experian who both said they couldnt see anything on my file that would deter RBS from employing me - just as I thought.

I managed to find a number for the recruitment team on a previous email, so I called them up and explained that I had spoken to the CR agencies, and I really couldnt understand what it was that was causing the problem.

The lady told me she would look into it and call me straight back.

So 10 minutes later she called back to advise me that there was a 'delinquent payment' on my credit file from Orange from over a year ago.........guess how much for...... one single pound.....yes £1. It must have been a time when I cancelled my contract and then an overlap of one day or so, which meant I owed them either pence or up to the value of a £1.

To my absolute pure luck.....the lady said that due to the value of the 'delinquent payment' (not even sure what one of these is) that they would disregard it and continue with the remaining checks, and send my contract of employment in the post.

Just shows how something SOOOO SMALL can be detrimental. I was actually devastated, cried for two hours, because of the fact I was so exciting about this new job, and that I had turned down two other jobs. I had no idea I was going to fail the check.

Thank god it sorted now though. i would advise anyone in the same position to find out what it is, dont just let it lie!

:)

Good for you for following it up and thank goodness you met with a sensible response from them.

    Good luck with the job.
