Shopping Tips
Don't spend five pounds to dry clean a shirt. Donate it to the charity shop instead. They'll clean it and put it on a hanger. Next morning buy it back for two pounds.

I know this might not be the case for other parts of the UK but in scotland you can get these for free from your local diabetes clinic which is why i am always surprised at why people would pay for them, unless they were not diabetic

My OH gets his for free too, we're in England.

Remember though, you need to get the test strips for them. OH gets them free on prescription, but if you're not entitled to a free blood glucose monitor then you'd have to pay for the strips also..

Hi - slightly off the topic - sorry - but how do you get free blood monitors? I have been type 1 diabetic for 13 years and always had to pay for my monitors.

Not so much of a bargain after all then
Well my mum lives in the States and u dont get anything for free there so it probably still is useful to her. It might even be cheaper than buying that in the States

just get your gp to write a prescription for one or phone the number on the back of the monitor box and ask for one,, then you get the test sticks on prescription (thats why they are happy to suppy the monitor for free) ,

Being Type 1 diabetic means you get all prescriptions free - Blood Glucose meter, test strips, insulin, needles etc.

I don't understand why anyone would buy one of these meters. Either you're diabetic and you get one for free, or you're not diabetic in which case why would you want one?
  • I think this may depend on where you live (postcode lottery!) Different health authorities have different 'rules'. I am Type 2 Diabetic, I had to buy my monitor (have to say they aren't expensive) but get my strips on prescription....which I have to pay the standard presecription charge for. So it maybe only Type 1 Diabetics who get their prescriptions for free?

As far as I know blood glucose machines are not prescribable. However most companies/diabetic units give them away. The strips are available on prescription. Free prescriptions are only available to people whose diabetes requires medical treatment ie other than diet controlled-unless you qualify for free prescriptions for other reasons
