OP seems to be ok with the review if it's all positives and he's getting pay rise etc after it, but refuses to go if the employer monitors his performance with chance of disciplining/sacking him. You can't refuse to go. And for someone of your 'career aspirations' you can start aspiring where to find a new job if you carry on with this attitude problem of yours.

Your age is of no relevance to the company. Performance reviews are to ensure your performance remains competitive at all times. If you can't cut it out you'll simply be replaced by someone else, perhaps even someone much younger with less 'experience' than you but able to perform the job better. :P

I sort of get where the op is coming from. These reviews can be productive or a monumental waste of time for all concerned. However i broadly agree refusal kinda forces some kind of responce which wont be good.

I usually just go through the motions, sometimes placing things down to protect me later if the organisation is in real turmoil "i am concerned about" or "i dont know enough about". They then make plans to address it, which never happen, but this makes it difficult if there is later a problem in that area. You agreed to coach me i did my bit in flagging it up you didnt do yours.

Perhaps it is best to appriach the topic another way - what do you hope to achieve in refusing? I dont see anything to gain. Just like if you went to the review and said i believe this is a total waste of time. It just rubs people up the wrong way

Imagine OP was due for a promotion - both pay rise and job status jump... and then he refused to attend the performance review. Employer holds a grudge, gives that promotion to someone else, and puts OP on the list of employees to get rid of if company budget drops anymore.

Yes you can refuse, however in my company the performance review is linked to incremental pay rises, if you are not assessed you don't get a pay rise.

utilbill, are you bonkers? Do you think seriously think for one moment that there is any aspect of employment law that says you do not have to co-operate with your employers if you don't want to?

Many appraisal systems are purely tick box exercises and wholly useless, welcome to the normal commercial world. However, the fact that you find this 'humiliating' speaks volumes for you, and not in a good way.

Yes, more may be expected of you in coming years than in the past, and not taking part in an appraisal - even if your manager was happy with that- would not be a good way of making sure that you were not stitched up.
