Anyone know if I'd be entitled to the £100 job grant?

I read about this on the DirectGov website and I can't see anywhere on there that says you have to have been claiming JSA for a set amount of time. Yet today someone in the job centre said you had to have been claiming for at least 6 months.

I'm signing off as I start a new job on Monday. I can't remember what date i started my claim for JSA but it's not been 6 months. My last payment is due on Tuesday.

I was hoping to use it to cover travel costs and also for some clothes as I have very little in my wardrobe that the company would deem suitable. Apparently the (very) smart trousers i wore for my interview weren't deemed smart enough

I know I'll have my last lot of JSA but I don't know when the first pay day will be so I don't want to use it all up.

:j:j Congratulations on the new job.:j:j

I think you need to be on JSA for 26 weeks.

Have you looked in any charity shops for trousers ? Just a thought.

Not sure what help there is out there. Am sure someone with more know how will pop along.

Before you sign off, ask the JCP for some work clothes from the adviser's fund.

    Hi,
Any half decent advisor should support you with(depending on weather your job is likely to last more than a couple of months):

    1 months travel
    2. At least one suitable outfit for work (e.g. shoes, trousers, blazer, shirt)

This is on top of any job grant.

Speak to your advisor and explain to him/her that you have no suitable outfit and that it could compromise your position. They should have no problem 'helping you out'. At the end of the day, getting you back into (sustainable) employment is what they are there for. I suggest that you be firm on this, and if need be speak to a manager.

Also, rules are that funding for a new job should be issued before you start work. So make sure you sort it out tomorrow.

Thank you everyone, aside from the job grant I wasn't sure of any other help to get for this sort of thing so I will definitely phone them up tomorrow and see what they have to say.

    Much appreciated :)

I did get the £100 job grant but it was after I'd been unemployed for 6 months. I fortunately got a temporary job within a couple of days of the final letter coming from the JC to say my 6 months was up.

It was a close shave.

I'm back on JSA now though, as the temp job came to an end. Only been signing for two weeks though, so far.
  • hope it all works out for you 1940sgal, congratulations on the job, really wish you all the best.
