My job search

As you may have read on my previous posts I got made redundant and am approaching the end of my notice period which is 19th October.
I have been to the jobcentre today, just to have a look at jobs and now it's a touchscreen system, I put in my criteria, selected the box for the area I want and it still came up with jobs covering most of the UK! I might as well have sat at the laptop and looked on their website as that is useless as well!
The Jobcentre is right by my local town and I have been into a couple of shops advertising for Xmas staff and I've got the application forms. I'm really not sure what sure what hours/days to put down (they have tick boxes on the form). I have children at school. Do shops usually take on people for just 2/3 days per week and would it look more favourable if I put that I'm available on a Saturday (I am)?
I have a CV, I look at the paper every week, jobcentre website, I am a bit wary of agencies though!
