Dog food going up

I don't bulk buy huge amounts of tinned dog food now as my lab is getting on a bit. I bought some 6 packs of Winalot from Ocado on 30/08 and it was £3 ie same price per can as Poundland (2 cans for £1). Today six cans cost 3.48. I looked on mysupermarket and yep it's not just Ocado, Winalot has gone up 48p
Looks like other brands have gone up too.

Supermarket puts prices up! Never.
According to mySupermarket the price goes up and down quite a lot. (look at the graph which shows price changes over the last 12 months)
By next month they'll probably hope you'll have forgotten about the price rise & you'll be really pleased when they have another amazing price cut.0 -

Cheap dog food can be false economy. People pay for the convenience of getting dog food alongside their grocery shopping but consider buying from a petshop or even ordering online to get better deals.
With pet food, you need to not only consider the price of the food but the value of it too. Many cheap foods are full of bulking ingredients like cereals, which cost less but also provide less nutritional value, so you ultimately have to feed more food. Switching to a slightly better quality food can save money - you might only need to feed one tin a day of a better food instead of 3, so if the better food is only twice the price, you're actually saving money by feeding 1/3 of the amount.
Not saying you have to switch from supermarket own to a top-notch branded dog food but there are lots of lower budget dog foods on the market that work out cheaper. A recent example was a member on here getting their relative to switch from Asda wet food trays to Autarky salmon & rice dry food - not only did it clear up the dog's skin issues (saving them a fortune in vet bills and medication!) but cost it cost less per day than the Asda food. Also, being better quality food, it's likely to keep the dog in better health and reduce vet bills in the future - for example, much less sugar in it than in these cheap wet jelly-type foods, so the dog is less likely to require dental work which isn't cheap in dogs!
If the dog will eat dry food then look into brands like Autarky, Skinners, CSJ and similar. If it has to be wet food, the website Zooplus has lots of range with some slightly unusual brands (from around Europe mostly) that have more meat content than supermarket stuff but at a better price. PAH also sell a half decent wet food called Wainwrights (the trays, not the tins - the latter are made by a separate manufacturer and aren't as good yet cost more too) which is often on some kind of BOGOF or similar deal too.0 -
