Deep Conditioning Hair Treatment

While my girlies are away at their dads this weekend, I have decided to do a bit of pampering. My hair is in a state, mainly because of the bleach and that I don't look after it too well, so I wondered if anyone knew of any cheap conditioning treatments I could soak my hair in (the likes of olive oil, or moisturing cream etc) and what to do.

I too have bleached hair and I just use ordinary olive oil. Apply it all over, especially to the ends then cover hair with clingfilm (easier than a plastic bag). Leave for 15-20 mins and wash hair as normal.

Hope you have a good weekend:j

Just seen this on pinterest -

  • oh lovely idea.
    my ideas:
olive oil- massage into hair, pop on a shower cap or 30 mins-1 hour.
meanwhile, massage some in to your face, after 1 minute, get a hot flannel and press it to your skin, then wipe off oil.
mix olive oil and sugar or salt and scrub hands, then rinse (don't use soap)

raw egg- separate an egg (or two depending on size)
paint on the white to your face,a nice protein tightening mask.
spread yolk onto hair, massage, leave 10 mins then wash off.

have a lovely pamper evening :)

Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid, a fatty acid small enough to penetrate the hair cuticle (most oils cannot, they sit on the surface). Use the heat of your head to help it penetrate. Research suggests coconut oil can protect against damage and protein loss during washing, from UV light and from bleaching. The only protein that can strengthen the structure of the hair is hydrolysed, others such as egg are too large to penetrate so will only temporarily coat the surface. However neither the oil nor the protein will penetrate if you hair is coated in silicone conditioners and styling products (ingredients -cone, -xane, -conol) so you will probably need to clarify a couple of times.

Thanks for everyone's answers. Never actually got around to doing it, shall try again when he has girlies for the weekend.

But... this olive oil method. Do I apply the olive oil to my hair when it is dry or do I wet it first?

When it comes to washing off the oil, do I need to put shampoo in before wetting my hair (as I think I heard somewhere oil won't come out if hair is wet and to apply the shampoo first)?

I apply the oil to dry hair, especially the ends, then just wash hair as normal.
If I don't have the time or inclination for messing around with oil I coat the ends of my dry hair in conditioner. Then wash, condition etc as normal. My theory is the conditioner stops the ends getting stripped of oil. It works for me but I have no studies or evidence to support my theory.

Just a note to say be careful with some oils as they can fade colour! I think coconut oil is the main one I've seen people complain at (makeupalley.com) but I can't help wondering if the same applies to other oils too. I've tried this to reduce colour when I've had a colour come out too darkly but I do this straight after I've coloured so I'm not sure what the cut-off point is in, but if you are worried maybe ask on there.

Aussie and Frizz Ease both have nice intensive conditioners. If you can, leave on for upwards of 20 minutes on damp hair, re-wet hair if it becomes too dry (you need hair to be wet to absorb the conditioner) and if possible, try to stay somewhere warm.
If you can do this once a week the results seem to get better as the weeks go along but then gets to a point about 3-4 weeks later where you need to do a deep clean and start again but if you bleach your hair be careful what you pick to cleanse your hair with if you feel you need to.

I've read a few people say this but others say the complete opposite. My theory is it's the combination of oil and shampoo that is the problem, maybe oil with a lot of heat styling or maybe all three together. I use coconut oil to deep treat and a conditioner containing palm oil for my regular conditioner - all natural oils no silicones. My hair is dyed semi permanent pink-red and the lengths have not needed to be touched in five or six months with little fading. Basically it's permanent!

I conditioner only wash and don't really heat style so not opening the cuticle, perhaps the lauric acid enters my hair and is not drawn back out again with every wash. I have even wondered whether the oils have helped 'seal in' the colour, since it's believed coconut oil makes hair less porous.

When I had permanent dyed red hair my experience was the biggest enemy was hot water.

I conditioner-only wash with Inecto coconut conditioner (only one of the range that is silicone free), leave in conditioner with Fructis Repair & Shine (meant to be wash out but growing out damage), KTC coconut oil from Tesco for intensive treatments, Boots Essentials firm hold gel. Very MSE! :money:

I also dye, Nutrisse blonde the roots then go over with La Riche Directions semi permanent to get the pink-red, it's highly pigmented and I leave it longer than recommended.

I had wanted to ask what brand of colour you use- but you use the same brand as me! :) I use the red colour though having worked through a few other brands. I used the 4.6 a few months back but it didn't look like the box said it would...! I ended up using coconut oil but sat with it in the sauna before washing it out and this did get a load of the colour out (not all but some) so maybe your onto something with the heat plus the oil (I don't get the same effect using a normal intensive conditioner in a sauna).

I don't do the hot water thing though as I used to as I love a hot shower but I found my head was getting flatter as the months went by- I worked out the hot water was affecting the hair roots and taking all the volume! It seemed to rectify itself after a few weeks of turing down the temperature. No difference with the hair colour though.

I don't CO and once a week wash with a shampoo twice so maybe its something to do with that? Or could be the different hair colour? I know reds are wierd- they seem to fade fastest yet if you ever want to bleach them out they take the most work to do so, never understood that!
