Garden Tools

Where is the best place to buy garden tools (spade/fork/hoe) at the minute and any recommendations on quality /price?
...not sure how much value there is in buying the most expensive...any comments??

Oh and a small grass collecting electric lawnmower....I see they're advertised around £60:confused:

For the basics (forks & hoes ECT) buy the best you can afford.

We bought a cheap fork & one of the prongs broke with heavy work.

Just wanted to say thank you- went to Homebase,
    spade was £6.99 or £12.99 or £19.99 or £24.99
    I picked the £12.99 option

I have found most garden tools to be quite shoddy lately .. even those that I previously considered to be good makes (not that I am an expert). I used to buy expensive but have learned that, irrespective of cost I need to buy often. :(

Seriously, I did warn you. I don't think it matters so much with spades or shovels, but anything with prongs like forks & rakes ect. Saying that cheap spades the head would probably break off.

You only bought it yesterday. Take it back & buy the most expensive one, I wouldn't buy a cheap one again.

I returned it and bought a more robust one.

Homebase- no problem with the exchange.

Just remember to give the garden a damned good forking and be very careful about what your job title is when hoeing. :D

I see your Forking problems are covered. I agree, don't go for the cheaper ones, I had the same problem as yourself when I bought a cheap fork.. Funny I always remember my dad having very good quality forks on the farm bought from the local Ag. Supplies store.. mind you as always, they don't make things like they used to..

On the Electric mower query. My own opinion (Don't know if anyone else will agree) Stay clear of flymo's and anything where the collection box is above the blades (i.e. the grass has to go around bends to get to the collection box) if your grass is any way long or damp they just clog up and are a pain in the a*se to be honest. I would recommend a small Bosch or Qualcast electric mower as available in B&Q (They're pretty much the same just different badges as both use direct drive Bosch Electric Motors) The grass box is behind the blades so less blockages, they're direct drive so no belts to worry about either. I bought A Qualcast for a rental property years ago and I've never had a problem with it. great little machine. (Obviously if you have the cash you'll never beat a good Petrol mower, depends on the size of your garden though...
