Negotiable Salaries

I know what I am worth salary wise and I know I am out or work and would take anything at all as a stop gap but what if an advert says 'negotibale' and the employer will not tell you what the salary range is?

Do you just say a figure and hope for the best?

This company want to conduct a telephone interview with me and wont give anything away.

If they only have in their budget say £22k and I wanted for example £25k it will never be negotiable, will it?

Why don't they just say what the range is? They know the level of person they need and what they will have to pay to get them. It's just very frustrating.

  • I'd imagine if they say negotiable then they don't have a fixed budget. The best you can do is make your case, ask for what you think is fair, and add a bit so they can 'negotiate' you down a bit in return. But to be honest, if you're not currently working they know your negotiating position is weaker.

I've found the best way to find what they are willing to pay is ask for something totally OTT - you won't get it, but they'll soon come back with another figure if they actually want you ;)

    FWIW I hate haggling, too.

It's an accounts role, sales ledger, purchase ledger, credit control, balance sheet recs, payements and payroll.

I emailed them back earlier saying I was looking for £22k (was on over £26k at last job) and they replied.

'We are not offering salary at the level you are looking for'

They had said before it was based on experience and I have 20 years experience too.

Therefore not at all negotiable!

No they are not going to come back with any figure if they wont pay it. They will just pay a low salary to anyone they think can do the job and not pay for the experience.

    currently nothing(what someone will pay)

thats not what you say later

nothing to lose except time so sell get the offer then negotiate

see above if you want 25 and 22 is on offer then thats the stop gap

What you need to do is convince them you will stay on the salary they will pay even though you believe you are worth more and keep looking.

Some places genuinly have a flexable budget they may have a target job with range but have potential in mind so will stretch for exceptional candidates.

This is the reason I will never apply for anything that does not state the salary range - it's complete BS, just a way to pay below market rate.

Believe and know I am. This role full stop is worth more than £22k - not that they are even paying that.

No they do not have a flexible anything as he was clear saying it was not what they were going to pay. It could be £12k for all I know and since he said it was based on experience I have no idea what he was reading when he read my CV as I have 20 years experience in the same industry but seems they want all the knowledge for crap pay.

He never gave me an indication as to what they were willing to pay hence NO negotiation. Should I have just said £12k then?

Yes they do not advertise the salary as they know no one will apply for it if they did.

Job advertised on Job Seekers Direct - I should have known it was a crap one!

Do you want a job or not

Get offered it then decide if you will take it.

Jobs are not worth what they used to be...
