Is it fair to discriminate on age, gender or race in insurance pricing?

  • I am amazed with all people that agree that insurance companies should be allowed to use other peoples accident figures to affect in any way the prices another person pays. Everyone should start on a figure and that should then only increase etc if that person makes a claim.
WOULD those people agree if suddenly the government turned round and said that we must all serve a year in prison due to them averaging out the ages of criminals?

I do 50k miles a year; because of daft speed cameras, points are inevitable if you do a lot of miles, I reached 9 points (all on the motorway & all before 6am with nothing on the road). My premiums are 2x what they would be without the points even though I've never driven dangerously or had an accident. I was thinking of having a sex change to reduce the premiums, but fortunately I don't need to now.

Totally laughable. Points are only inevitable if you drive like a loony and not to speed limits. So in your eyes is it ok for a person to drive at 40 past a school? speeding is speeding. Wow you might knock of 5 mins on a journey. Hope your points are worth it. I hope you never kill a child on your nothing on the road speeding trips.

I have spent years with high premiums just because I share similar physical features to some bad drivers.

To me the problem was discrimination was clear, you could a male and female of the same age in the same address, the female could have 3 points for speeding and still get cheaper quotes than the male.

So a female PROVEN to be a bad driver still gets cheaper quotes than a male PROVEN to be a good driver.

To say there is only 2 types of people (male/female) and all are same within each group is ridiculous, yes more males might be reckless but there is reckless females, so give the reckless high premiums rather than all males having to pay for the reckless males and females just because more of said reckless are males.

This move is very much welcomed.

there is a difference between risk assessment and discrimination.

Gender or racial profiling for insurance pricing is discrimination. Age profiling based on research that many younger drivers are idiots is risk assessment. Although I'm a young driver and not an idiot, most other people that I see my age in cars are.

The price for young drivers are still too high though imo, and they get away with it because insurance is a legal requirement, so it's a "if you're young and want to drive, like it or lump it" scenario.
