So, I have thick but very very baby fine limp hair in a graduated bob. One side is ruler straight and the other, the longer parting side, has quite a few kinks so it develops a very defined curl. Because of this I am neither straight nor curly and I have to intensively style my hair to be one, or the other.

Adding to the issues I have a double crown and a very large fringe cowlick as well, so hairdressers always say it’s a beast to cut. No layers because of the double crown, no fringe because of the cowlick and can’t be long as the weight adds to the limpness (and oddly the weight does not drag the curl out)

After a day out where we got a bit damp and my hair reverted to its half/half appearance much to the amusement of my co-workers A friend suggested my local beauty college as they are doing a promo on Brazilian Blow outs.

However during the same conversation someone also suggested a volumising perm as the limpness is the biggest issue.

Can you have both? I would be ecstatic if I could smooth out the hair for a even look but also have a shot of volume added. Or is there some other treatment that will do both?

I should mention my hair is in good condition trimmed very often (helps keep the curls under control) and I have a home colour on it which is a semi perm put in about three weeks ago.

Thank you for reading and I will await you thoughts

Not a hairdresser but have you tried the Curly Girl method? You may have more waves/ curls than you think, even after I started I though the sides were curly and the back close to straight, but that turned out to be how I was handling it. Especially letting it get too dry before scrunching in the curl (CG you style from sopping wet, it makes a massive difference).

    Curly Girl:
    - avoid sulphate shampoos, preferably conditioner only wash
    - Silicone-free conditioners
    - no hair brush, only comb when wet
    - style hair from dripping wet
    - scrunch in leave in conditioner
    - scrunch in loads of alcohol free gel
    - plop or plunk with a microfibre or woven towel, NO terry cloth or turbans
    - air dry or diffuser on low NO touching.

Don't understand how your hair can be thick AND fine?

Very common for we curlies. The individual hairs can be very fine but the amount of hair 'thick' or the hair can be course ( individually thick) and the over all amount of hair 'thin'

still confused! My hair is fine, although straight. I have quite a lot of hair but that doesn't mean my hair is thick, it just means I have a lot of fine hair.

Not looking for a row, just genuinely confused as to me, in this context, I have always thought of 'fine' as being the opposite of 'thick'!

I have very thick but very fine hair. I also have a graduated bob. right now it's a bit weird because I couldn't get to my usual hairdresser and the one I went to put in a really deep parting and my hair does not like it I usually have a side parting because I have a whorl crown (thanks Dad) so having a side parting takes away the worst of it but this is practically at my ear and it won't 'take' so I have a really long layer over a short layer on one side, kind of like an undercut thats growing out.

Anyway my hair is pretty straight apart from the really short bits which just poke out but when I was younger I used to put so much rubbish on my hair trying for volume and less frizz. My boyfriends used to moan that their fingers would get stuck if they tried to run them through my hair.

Anyway I was delayed at work for an extra couple once and all my products had run out so all I had was shampoo and conditioner. What a difference it made! I have bounce and shine and my hair feels thick and soft. I get complimented on how healthy it is when the hairdresser works on it. I always leave it to dry naturally at twice or at least on a Sunday and I only ever use products on a special occasion.

Who cares if it doesn't all lie the same way or if it is a bit frizzy? I still use products but only on special occasions and I have often taken risks with cuts that don't suit but they grow out.

Try going product free for a couple of weeks and just see what happens. It might be that you have overstyled your hair so much that it is rebelling and it is exactly what it needs.

Usually ... thick hair means a lot of strands, thin hair means fewer than average strands. Coarse hair means thick individual strands, fine means thinner than average individual strands. So thick and thin are opposites, coarse and fine are opposites. :)

Sorry I didn’t mean to confuse.

Each individual hair is very thin/fine. But I have a lot of it. However because of its nature it looks limp with no associated volume you would get with thick hair. So if you put it in a pony tail for example the gather point would be tiny.

I upset a hairdresser once when (many years ago) I had plait in extensions. She thought my hair was thin and limp so the weave would take a couple of hours.

Mid afternoon she was still at it and in the end called a friend over to help as she was getting hand cramp. She got proper grumpy as she had been paid a flat fee. I had mentioned during the consultation that I had a lot of hair but she thought I was delusional because clearly it looks slight.

It has distinctly two different sides, my left is poker straight and right is very curly. When my hair is wet you can see the defined line where the two types of hair meet. (I have always thought it has to do with the double crown, I think one of the crowns is straight hair and the other crown is curly and that’s why I have a half/half effect - I am not sure that hair works that way, but that’s what it looks like)

    :D

I have booked in at the local beauty/hairdressing school and they have sugested a volumising perm with an intensive conditioning treatment. I have been advised that the class will be watching as the tutor does my hair so it will take some time. but who cares at a mere snip at £5.50 for both
