Quarter Life Crisis

Hello everybody. I am new the forum and I could do with a bit of guidance and direction as I do not really know who I can speak too and the job centre are useless.

I'm 22.. working 1 full time and 1 part time job. from mon-fri i deliver leaflets and sat-sun i work at the spar. As you can imagine this gets pretty hectic.. I'm desperate for a full time job (mon-fri) that pays better than what I have.. but I have no idea what to go for My qualifications are as follows:

Ordinary University Degree in Psychology
BTEC National Diploma in Software Engineering - M,M,M
ITQ in IT User Skills (I was told this was a valuable qualification.. for what.. i don't know)
Key Skills Level 3 in Communication

I would like to go back to computing.. However, I don't really know what jobs I can apply for with no IT work experience. I have been applying for admin jobs with no luck.

Any guidance or help will be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Andy

What grade did you graduate for your degree in psychology? Did you graduate with honours...?

The software engineering diploma sounds useful.

IT User Skills... Lol. It's useless.

Don't even mention the Level 3 Communications Key Skills in your CV. It's also useless.

You should be able to get in some entry level IT job. Your degree shows you can learn and have some transferable skills. The diploma proves you are able in software engineering.
  • The degree is just a pass degree without honours I think. Unfortunately, without some mitigating circumstances to explain your grade, employers will just think you went to a 3 year party and didn't do any work.
I'm assuming you studied full-time and not with the OU or on a part-time basis.
You need to do some career planning. Can you use your university (possibly remotely) to help? Contact the Careers Service and see what they offer.
You should do a skills audit and work out what you are good at, where your strengths lie
You could try the prospects planner to help you do some planning and then discuss the results with a Careers Adviser.
If you want to work in IT you need to be looking for either work in that field or volunteering. (using your computer skills for ageUK). I realise that with your work pattern, that might be difficult to fit in, but you need to start to make some changes for people to consider you.
You also need to keep your IT skills up to date. Can you do some top up courses or learn some developer languages. Teach yourself php, javascript, css or a higher language like C++ or Java
You are going to need to find some time in your life to make the changes to get a career and it isn't going to come without a lot of effort.
There are three types of people in this world. Those who can count and those who can't.
