Is there anything you want that you could save for instead? Not something too massive but an achieveable goal? Then you can get all obsessive about that instead of your potential lottery win!

How much money are you spending per week on lottery tickets?
  • I've been in a lotterys syndicate now for 4 years theres 12 of us, and have 10 lines every Wednesday and Saturday. Every Christimas we split between us the winnings up to December. Last Christmas we all received £19 each the most we've ever won in a year! The odds ae 49 million to one or something even crazier than that.

I would allocate so much a week to trying your luck with the Lottery, or whatever after you've paid all your living expenses to save having guilt trips about gambling if I were you.
  • The outcome of a survey done years ago was that the greatest amount of money spent on lottery tickets was spent by those who were in the most debt or had the lowest amount of free cash to spend on them. Even though I've got lots of debt & even though I know the odds of winning £10 never mind a big prize are stacked against me, I still do the lottery. I don't smoke, very rarely drink & don't spend loads on clothes or going out, so I'd know I'd hate to give it up completely.

What I started doing in January is working out how much I can afford to spend on lottery tickets each month, then saving half & spending half. That way I can have my little indulgence & can also get some savings out of it, as well as get an idea of how much I'm spending on tickets. Since Christmas, I've put aside £42. :j It's very easy to buy the tickets, but since seeing that hard cash build up in the jar, I've cut down on my tickets after realising that's how much I'd also spent on tickets that hadn't won anything. :)

Good point actually. I smoke and like a drink for example. I don't do the lottery or spend (waste) money in other ways that some people do. This is fundamentally why the debt-free's will fail IMO. Everyone needs an outlet somewhere, whatever it is...

Incredible story omg, thanks for that. Serious question, what do you think he would rather have now, the missus back or the £375k?

He is totally miserable now. Bought the sports car, nights out etc etc but still wants wife back. IMHO he would like to go back 8 years and not buy a lottery ticket. IT IS A TRUE STORY

I didn't doubt it omg. Well I guess he didn't have a choice ultimately but there's some kind of moral in there somewhere. Shame...

Re lottery tickets. Try putting the money you would spend on a ticket into a savings account. Write down your 6 numbers and check them every week. If your numbers are drawn check what you would have won and take it out of your savings. If I had done that I would have saved £42 lasy year (£1 per week less 1 x £10 win).
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)
