I've just taken delivery of a beautiful pair of shoes that I ordered from Hotter.com. They are leather lace up rambling shoes because I want to take up walking for exercise and wanted something really comfy and long lasting.

I love the shoes, they are top quality and want to keep them. However, they were expensive at £88 and when I tried them on without socks my big toes touched the front end of the shoe. They do not feel tight or anything but you know how it is when you are not quite happy with the fit of something. Also, I will be wearing socks with them.

I ordered them in my size which is 5. At the same time I also ordered a pair of slip on casual shoes. These are quite snug too but I am happy with them because slip on shoes always give a bit and I do not want them to fall off. I will not be wearing socks with them. I'm not sure whether to return the walking shoes and get the 5 and a half. I have got some shoes in 5 and a half but I'm worried that if I send them back the 5 and a half will be too big. Will I be able to return them a second time. Even writing this has convinced me I ought to send them back but I do want these shoes.

Definitely return them for the next size up - you should never have your toes touching the end of your boot for hiking, it will be painful going downhill.

For walking boots I always buy the next size above, not just half a size - I wear two pairs of socks, one thin and one thick, that way any slipping tends to mean socks rubbing against each other rather than me getting blisters.

Thanks I think I will do that. They are not actually walking boots, they are mainly shoes designed for walking. I will be walking the streets where I live (i live in a town) rather than country walking but I do take your point.

Hotter have really good customer services, why not give them a ring and ask them? They are always more than happy to exchange shoes and boots, so give it a try.

I'd change them for the 5.5 too.

Looking at them, being study lace ups, they aren't going to slip off if you size up half a size. As it is my left foot is a half size smaller than my right so I always have to have my shoes half a size too big on that foot - never a problem in lace ups, or anything with a fastening come to that.

I'm currently wandering round the house in my latest pair of hotters deciding if I am going to keep them. I've had problems with my knees and am steering clear of the high heels in the meantime (not that the problems are caused by heels, but no point aggravating the problem) and had to get some "sensible" shoes. Have to admit am enjoying the cushioney soft comfort of the hotters. Reminds me of some hush puppies I wore to death a few years ago, though I suspect these are better quality.

Thanks folks. Never realised Hotters were so popular! They are very comfortable. I am going to go for the 5.5s after your advice and talking it over with my husband.

Which pair have you got? I think their styles are lovely and they have some of the nicest flat shoes I have seen.

I agree with this, Hotter are an excellent company with great customer service. Their shoes last forever so it's definitely worth trying the next size.

Why not order the 5.5s before you send back the 5s and see how you get on?
