Polyester duvet problem

Hi all, my son has a duvet cover of his favourite football team on his bed, every morning the duvet inside has moved around so much it is a nightmare to get back in place (it's a double) and his bed never looks tidy when made. I know the problem is the fact that the cover is polyester so the duvet is slipping and have tried clips off eBay to hold the corners in place but it is still a nightmare! Is there anything else I can do bar giving up and getting a cotton duvet cover, seems a shame as this one is only 8 months old and he loves it

Thanks is advance xx

Perhaps you could sew buttons (say, every six to eight inches) along the inside edges of the duvet cover, and button loops on the edges of the duvet to correspond with the buttons (or do the same with Velcro); it would take a while to do but would be worth it if it works. Alternatively, buy a cheapish cotton quilt cover and put this on the duvet under the football one.

  • I agree with using velcro.

If you're any good at sewing, maybe you could replace one side of the duvet cover with a side from a cotton cover? Just a plain one (maybe in a matching colour), if the bottom of the football duvet cover is printed you now have two footie-themed duvet covers to alternative between, and the cotton side may help the duvet stay in place more easily.

Hmmm - my OH is a wriggler, to the extent we now have separate duvets as I ended up freezing, with no covering at all, most nights whilst he was completely wrapped up in the kingsize duvet. And he wriggles so much that the duvet never stays put inside its cover, and often comes out of the opening altogether; the reason I'm telling you this is because we have always used 100% cotton covers, and the duvet he's using ATM is a very expensive goose down & feather one, in a cotton case, which still ends up completely mangled every morning. So it may not be the polyester that's 100% to blame. Heaven knows why he's so active whilst unconscious, but he's an energetic & sporty sort of person altogether.

Only one thing helped; I physically stitched the duvet into the corners of the cover & several times along the edges too, with brightly-coloured embroidery cotton. But that's a lot like hard work when you take the cover off for washing, and have to unpick the stitches & stitch another one back on! I did try safety/nappy pins but they came undone & stabbed him.

Sorry - not much help really! I hope someone comes along who has found a solution to this problem - then I can try it too!

  • I second the buttons, I have a six year old who can mangle a duvet cover/duvet in minutes, I've watched him do it.

For a single duvet I stitched four buttons onto the duvet, one in each corner, then created loops on the inside of the duvet covers. It doesn't work perfectly but even if 1 button stays in the loop then it makes getting the bed back to normal so much easier.

If you stitch a length of cotton tape to each corner of the duvet and the same inside each corner of the cover you can tie it in place. It's more secure than buttons.

Thanks everyone for all the ideas and tips, yes he is a wriggler so not sure a cotton duvet would be that much better! Will get my needle and thread out and get to work :T
